DECONTAMINATION

It is advised that an air mattress system should be decontaminated between each patient. This ensures there is no risk of cross infection. We can fully decontaminate all makes and models of air mattress systems. During a patients use of an air mattress if any bodily fluids come into contact with the system, it is best to have the system fully decontaminated as this can cause premature failure of the top cover and internal cells if not caught early. Should there be any discolouration on the underside of the top cover, it is best to have the system decontaminated by us.

Our Decontamination Process

  • Upon arrivial at our workshop, the mattress is tagged with a job number and home name to ensure it is easily identified and there is no risk of the system being lost.

  • It is then stored in a cold store to reduce the ability of any bacteria or viruses to multiply, thus reducing the chance of cross infection in the store.

  • The mattress is then brought into our decontamination facility, where the top cover, base sheet and internal cells are separated.

  • The top cover, base sheet and any additional covers are washed in a washing machine with bacteriacidal and virucidal detergent at a temperature that will not damage the covers.

  • The internal cells are then inflated and go through a 2 stage decontamination process.

  • Stage 1 - We use a high strength disinfectant and we remove all traces of contaminents, such as blood or bodily fluids.

  • Stage 2 -  We use a bacteriacidal and virucidal disinfectant to ensure all bacteria and viruses are removed from the cells. During this phase any leaking cells will be identified and replaced.

  • The pump unit is then cleaned with a bacteriacidal and virucidal disinfectant. Any un-necessary or out of date labels are removed. The mains cable is also cleaned and checked for damage.

  • The covers are then machine dried and the cells are air dried to ensure there will be no moisture held within the system.

  • Once dried the mattress is reassembled and the pump is attached to start the 24 hour cycle test, to ensure the system is in complete working order and ready to be used when returned.
